Student Composer Project 2024: Songs for the People by Jacob Picking
Since its inception in 1990, Baltimore Choral Arts Society's Student Composer Project has encouraged young student composers to write choral music. The composers receive mentorship, have their work read by the Baltimore Choral Arts Chamber Singers, and receive a recording of their piece.
One of this year's selected composers was Jacob Picking, a student at West Chester University. You can find Jacob on Instagram at jpickingmusic and on RUclips at @jpickingmusic

    Brilliant intro with the choir entrance! This psalm is a Song of the Ascents. It was likely sung either by pilgrims ascending into Jerusalem or as part of an entrance liturgy into the Jerusalem temple. The choir put the text into context by processing to it. Again, It was brilliant!

    Nice. Just like to pick up the tempo a little, and lot less vibrato out of the sopranos.

  • @mattnbin
    @mattnbin 2 года назад

    Unfortunately, American choirs seem to always have the sopranos singing in operatic style with heavy vibrato. This looses the effect of grand British choral music that is written for choirs that have soprano lines sung as straight notes- usually boys. Much work has gone into this performance and is commendable, but would be better enhanced sans the opera voices.

      @@leonietaylor7054 You are kind! You will be able to hear it sung properly for the Queen in 2022 as it is her platignum jubilee.. a 70 years as monarch of 14 or so countries. You will get to hear the rarely sung section with the 'Vivat Regina Elizabeta' (which should only be sung if she, Elizabeta, is there). Normally it is not a processional for the Queen (Handel's Zadok the Priest is our Queen's processional) but you can hear 'I Was Glad' as a processionl for royal brides like Kate Middleton (as she was going up the aisle: but by the return trip down the aisle she was HRH the Duchess of Cambridge). Royal music is fun and sometimes transformative (literally in Kate's case). Ironic (but lovely) that americans sing it all so well.
